What
to Do if You Find a "Lost Pet"
- Call the animal
shelter closest to the location where you actually found the animal (not the one closest to your
home address).
- Place
a classified ad in the Kansas City Star and/or the paper of your local township. Some papers offer "Found" ad
placements for free.
- Find and use the public bulletin boards
at grocery stores, Wal-Marts, veterinarian offices and/or emergency clinics and shelters to distribute
simple flyers. (Be aware that most cities and suburbs have ordinances against tacking up posters on telephone
poles and traffic signs.) We've posted small flyer templates on our downloads
page for you to print out.
It's important to make the
effort and get the word out so the real owner has some chance of finding their lost companion!
What to Do if the Animal
Looks Like a "Veteran" Stray
- True strays can be very dangerous! Carefully
consider approaching an animal that "looks" like they've been at it a while. Most strays are
very wary of human mistreatment, do not willingly submit to our "friendly" advances, and will
fight tooth and nail as long as necessary to escape.
- Call the animal
control office closest to the location of the animal and report where it was last seen, its condition,
etc. Professional handlers use special no-harm traps or slip collars to snag uncooperative or scared
animals.
